On Friday evening, Cortland and Drexel matched up for their third meeting of the season. With 12 seconds to go in regulation, John Gattone of Drexel tied the game at four a piece to force overtime and went on to win the game for his Dragons team just 61 seconds into the third overtime. Gattone is now up to six goals and one assist through their two games at Regionals. With the victory, Drexel takes on Montclair in another win or go home game tomorrow (Saturday) morning where they’ll look for revenge after falling to them 5-3 earlier this season.

Despite trailing by a goal in the final period of regulation, Gattone stated that, “We knew that we were playing good hockey throughout the game and that the goals would come if we kept playing hard and getting the puck to the net with traffic.” After suffering a 5-4 loss to Hofstra on Friday morning, Drexel was facing elimination similar to Cortland. “We made some slight gameplay changes on the defensive end that helped, but other than that, we really came together as a team,” Gattone said. “There was much more positivity on the bench, more communication on and off the rink and more energy all around.”

The message for Drexel remained the same throughout each of the three overtime periods. Gattone explained this by saying, ‘We were really just trying to stick to our game through overtime of playing as a team and getting pucks and traffic to the net.” When it was all said and done, Gattone had nothing but praise for goaltender Stefen Rosner of Cortland after making 66 saves in the loss. Last season’s Rookie of the Year said that, “Cortland’s goalie was great tonight, so we knew it wouldn’t be easy.” Although his Drexel team was facing a hot goaltender in Rosner, Gattone concluded by saying, “As exhausted as we were going into the third overtime period, we knew we were playing to stay alive tonight and that was really our driving force.”
