Connecticut came into their meeting with Towson with nothing to lose,
having never defeated the Tigers in six previous games. It took only 17
seconds until the Huskies were brought back into reality. Dan Stewart
gained the Towson zone with speed but was forced wide by the defense.
Stewart continued to carry the puck behind the net where he made a drop
pass at the post were Ryan Cowdell was waiting to give the Tigers a 1-0
lead. Dane Houser and David Frank added goals for the Tigers and AJ
Nisbet put one in on the power play to give Towson a 4-0 lead after the
1st period.
Early in the 2nd period, with the teams skating 3 on 3, Seth Heller came up big in net for Connecticut making three saves in the span of ten seconds to keep the huskies within four. However, two minutes later, David Frank gained the zone and sucked the defense down low before firing a shot over Heller's glove to stake the Tigers to a seemingly insurmountable 5-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, Connecticut finally showed signs of life when Mark Quigley beat Trevor Nau with a wraparound but failed to finish the play. Undeterred Quigley chased down the defense and intercepted a pass before firing the puck into the back of the net and cutting the lead to four.
With the newly found momentum Connecticut took control of the play in the Towson zone. After a scrum in front of the net the puck squirted to the point where Quigley once again found the back of the net on rocket of a slap shot.
On the power play with a chance to cut the lead to three before the end of the second, the point man fell down, springing Ryan Cowdell on the short-handed breakaway. Cowdell made a nifty move in an attempt to beat the goalie, but Seth Heller made a nice glove save and kept the score at 5-2 heading into the second intermission.
With two men in the box to start the period, Connecticut had a huge opportunity and they didn't want to waste it. Trevor Nau did everything in his power to ensure that they did. Nau made five big saves on the kill before eventually surrendering a power play goal to Matt McCarthy on a rebound that cut the lead to 5-3.
Towson ran into big trouble when they found themselves having to kill a 4 on 2 for 1:20 after taking multiple penalties in a short amount of time. The penalties had an immediate negative effect when Mark Quigley scored his third goal of the game to get within one at 5-4.
Down a man with under a minute to go, Connecticut needed to control the puck before they could get the goalie to the bench. With 45 seconds remaining, Seth Heller made his way to the bench for the extra man as Connecticut gained control in Towson's zone. Trevor Nau made a huge save while being screened and with 20 seconds remaining in the game Brett Boss fired the puck the length of the rink, ending any last threat and helping Towson hold on for a hard-fought 5-4 victory.
