The D1 and B teams from the University at Buffalo traveled to Lemoyne, PA last weekend to continue their 2007-08 ECRHA regular seasons; the squads continued their season long success going a combined 4-1-1.
D1 Report:
Opening their weekend against a strong team from Towson, but the Wings prevailed 5-4; the wings went up 3-1 after the first period and never looked back. The scoring was led by Jason Francobandiero, who completed his first hatrick of the season; Richie "Settin the Tone" LaTona was solid again in net, making 23 saves.
In their matchup against Delaware, the Wings decided to turn the game into a scoring festival, winning the game by a final of 18-1. All but one skater for the Wings put a put in the net; the team was led by "Baby" Joe Malinowski, who had an 8 point performance, his linemate Tyler Walser had 6 points. Francobandiero had another solid game, as did his linemate Adam Hirsch. The birthday boy, Brandon Gasiewicz, scored twice and added an assist; Jay Slutky, Stephen Ostrow, and Shaun Golden all made it onto the score sheet mulitpe times as well. Richie "Settin the Tone" said after the game that next time: "I'd rather play out."
The Wings suffered their first loss of the year to Penn State on Sunday morning, losing 6-2; after going down early in the game, their forwards were simply not able to put the puck in the net. The consensus after the game for the Wings was: just wait for the rematch. The Wings record for the regular season now stands at 5-1, still leading the division.
B Report:
The UB Wings B squad started off their weekend against Binghampton, winning the game 14-0; Senior tender Chris Territo posted 12 saves in the shutout. Offensively, the Wings were led by Tim Newbold (6pts), Jon Klimek (5pts), and Jeff Elias (4pts). The defense was anchored by Kevin "The General" Cook and Nick Narchus, who was all smiles after the game.
Then the Wings got their rematch against Penn State, who they had tied earlier in the season; this game proved to have the same result, with J.J. Klimek tying the game in the final seconds, putting in a slapshot off a clean face-off win from "The General." Chris Territo had 20 saves in the 3-3 tie. These 2 teams are tied for the lead in the divison, look to watch their 3rd battle of the season coming up soon.
In their last game of the weekend, the Wings played Towson B; much in the same fashion as the D1 team, the boys put in 5 goals, which again proved to be too much for the Towson offense to match. Tim Newbold, Ryan Kelly, and the Klimek Brothers provided the offense for the Wings.
Overall, another solid weekend of hockey for the UB Wings family; they relied on their commitment to excellence: a good diet, early bedtimes, and lots of cuddling.
Look for the Wings to continue their winning ways November 17-18 way the heck down in Feasterville, PA.
