Senior leaders are an important part to any hockey team.
Simon Lock is the perfect example of a senior leader. Lock is the first
five-year player in the history of Shippensburg University, and his leadership
and experience are priceless. Lockâ??s leadership is on display every time he
steps on the floor. Lock explains, â??having an A, younger players look to you
and you want to be successful, being successful means winning.â?
Before Lock
played at Shippensburg University, he found great success on different levels
of ice and roller hockey. Lock competed for the Lawncrest Lightning based out
of Feasterville/Philadelphia, PA for four years. At the same time, Lock played
Varsity Ice Hockey for Central Bucks High School East in Doylestown, PA. It was
during these years that Lock experienced his greatest hockey moments. Lawncrest
won a national title and CB East qualified for the Flyers Cup in what was
Lockâ??s senior season. In addition to the Lightning and East, Lock played some
pro with the Harrisburg Lunatics. It was a combination of what he learned with
these teams that made him the player he is today.
Lock was a founding member of the
Shippensburg Roller Hockey club, so its no surprise that he has played more
games than any other Raider in the history of the club. His 99 games are more
than any other player to date, but thatâ??s not the only record that Lock holds
for the Raiders. Lock also holds team records for assists (76) and penalty
minutes (188). These records are indicative of the way Lock plays, hard nose
hockey, but more importantly, that he is a team player.
Although
hockey is a huge part of Lockâ??s life, itâ??s not the only thing he enjoys. Just
hanging out with the hockey team is something that Lock enjoys to do when he
isnâ??t trying to receive a degree in Communication and Journalism. Playing poker,
golf, other sports, and Madden 07 also takes up a large chunk of his free time,
but he also likes taking care of his Volkswagen GTi.
When asked about his individual goals this year, Lock
avoided the question. He stated, â??first and foremost, make sure we get to
regionals, and take it from there, we have the talent and potential to go far,
but we have to take it one step at a time.â? Once again I asked Lock about what
his individual goals were for the season and he responded in the same manor,
â??well, don't get me wrong, everyone likes to score goals and get points, but
Iâ??d like to enjoy myself at nationals instead, I guess having the 'A' is a
personal goal in itself, I need to set an example for this team.â? Lock and his
Raiders should achieve his goal of attending the regional tournament, but in
order to advance to the national tournament they will need to grow under Lockâ??s
leadership.
