William Bourque and Nat Barrick look to win a faceoff in a 10-3 blowout of Millersville

In the history of the ECRHA there have been some exciting game and exciting rivalries. In particular, in Division II, there are just some that stand above the rest. In the Northern Conference you have the classic Maine/Vermont rivalry that many people would say was the best in ECRHA DII, in the Central Conference, you can?t look past Duquesne and Penn State New Kensington who are always battling for supremacy for Pittsburgh, but as great as these rivalries are, there isn?t one that is closely contested as Shippensburg/Millersville. Maine holds a 7-3-2 lead in their series with their rivals, and Duquesne holds a 6-0-0 lead in their series. However, Shippensburg holds a 3-2-0 advantage in a series that has never seen a game decided by more than 2 goals, which in my mind makes it the greatest rivalry in all of ECRHA DII.

The series has seen many spectacular games, including a 7-6 victory by Millersville which saw then come back from a early 4-0 deficit, and eventually winning it with under 2 minutes in the game. In a 4-3 victory, Millersville also showed their poise with two goals in the final 3 minutes, including one with :01 on the clock to steal a victory. But that is not how things would play out this year. This year there was a different feeling in the air as both teams entered the game with losing records, something neither team is accustom to. Millersville entered the game nursing a 1-5-0 record, after losing some close games to their southern conference foes Drexel, Temple and West Chester. Shippensburg entered the game with losses in 4 out of the last 6 games, a stretch that goes unmatched in team history.

To add to the intense storyline that the Shippensburg/Millersville game had already, there was still more. This was the line of friendship. Dave Miller and Steven Parker both would be facing off against their good friend from Millersville Tim Hollenback. Friends and teammates during the off-season, this circle of friends was looking for a chance to get the upper hand with the victory in the first game of the season series. If that wasn?t enough, there were still the good old boys from Central Bucks East. Four graduates of Central Bucks East High School would be playing in this anticipated match up. Simon Lock (Senior), Gary Ehrmann (Junior), William Bourque (Sophomore) from Shippensburg, join starting goalie Joe DiNapoli (Junior) in net. Three of these players come from the class of 2003: Bourque, Ehrmann and DiNapoli.

For all the things that Shippensburg and Millersville did wrong up to this point, there was nothing more important than what they did right. Both teams have excellent leaders in Taylor Adams (Millersville) and Tommy Hagg (Shippensburg), both players show up and bring everything every weekend, every game and every shift, and with their leadership, both teams should continue to improve and add to the win column as their regular season schedules shift the easier non-conference schedules that await them. Both teams have spectacular goal tending, for Shippensburg they have Sophomore Steve Parker, who is currently bottled down with a list of injuries that include post concussion syndrome, a broken thumb, pulled groin and a sprained knee. Even with the injuries Parker entered the weekend with a 4.14 GAA and a .804 save percentage. Millersville was splitting time this year with a rotation of goalies, but junior Joe DiNapoli would get the start against Shippensburg.

After all of the hype and anticipation, the game was ready to begin, Jeff Kulp won the opening face-off and things were on their way. Shippensburg would get on the board first, while on the Power Play. Tommy Hagg had the puck on the far side of the boards, saw a lane, and fired the puck through the crease, where Jeff Kulp deflected up and over Joe DiNapoli?s pads and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Brian Schnepp made a nifty pass while being abused by defenseman in front of the next, and Jeff Kulp hammered it in to give Ship a 2-0 lead midway through the first period. Simon Lock and Jeff Kulp both add goals for Shippensburg before the end of the first period to give Ship the 4-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Shippensburg had been having problems in the second period all season, and everyone knew this, including Millersville. However, for this game, Ship came out in the second period faster then they did in the first, scoring two goals in the first 1:35 to give Ship a 6-0 lead. Tim Hollenback finally got Millersville on the board, early in the second when he stole the puck from Tommy Hagg behind the net, walked in front, and fired a shot through goalie Steve Parker?s five hole. The goal didn?t spark Millersville though, Shippensburg answered right back with a goal to finish out the frame, the goal was scored by Nat Barrick who continued his presence in the Ship/Millersville series.

Millersville responded to the circumstance though, and came out looking to cut their 7-1 deficit and hopefully sneak away with a point. Goals by Derrick Kreiser and Taylor Adams cut the lead to 7-3, but that was as close as they would get, as Shippensburg would answer with three goals to walk away with a 10-3 victory. Tommy Hagg and William Bourque scored the goals for Shippensburg, as they improved to 5-5-0 on the season. With the loss, Millersville drops to 1-6-0 on the season, with their aspirations of a regional playoff berth, slowly fading from view.
