D3 Championship Final SetECRHA March 4th, 2017 at 3:59PM March 4th, 2017 9:59PM
Things have become a lot more clear in division 3 as we’ve progressed through Saturday, and here’s how we got there:
In the loser’s semi-final, Cortland matched up against Rowan, as the 3 and 4 seeds would fight for a spot in the loser’s final, and a chance to play into the Championship game. This game was filled with multiple chances by both teams, but it was Cortland who would strike first, at 2:13 in the first period. Rowan would not let the early defecit slow them down as they outshot the Red Dragons 10-8 in the first period. The 1-0 lead continued until just over halfway into the second period, when Rowan forward Mike Wallach found the back of the net to tie the game at 1. Then, in typical regionals fashion, a late period goal by Rowan added excitement to the atmosphere, as Matthew Garrison was able to finish a pass and give the Profs the lead. The two teams went into the third with just a single goal separating them, and as goals were traded it was Rowan who was able to maintain the lead, and head to the loser’s final. Final Score: Rowan 4 Cortland 3.
At the same time was the D3 winner’s final which was a lot closer than the score indicated. With first place Farmingdale taking an early penalty, it was Julian Andujar who scored first for the Knights and put them up early over the favorites. However, James Kolokathis made sure that lead did not last as he would equalize just over 2 minutes later. The back and forth play continued before the teams traded goals starting with Frisina from Neumann, followed by Kolokathis again from Farmingdale. At this point, Farmingdale decided enough was enough, as they would score two goals seven seconds apart to end the period, as well as two more in the second, and four in the third to seal the deal and seal their spot in the Championship Final. Final score: Farmingdale 8 Neumann 2.
With Farmingdale looming, Neumann and Rowan squared off in the loser’s final to see who would meet the Rams for the championship game. Both teams fought evenly through the first period, however it was Robert Rura from Axl Frisina on the scoreboard first for Neumann. Then, the chess match continued until Owen Delesky was able to put one past the Rowan goalie to put the Knights up 2-0. As the third period began, Neumann was looking comfortable, but sometimes, comfortable is not always a good thing, as Sam Richards from Rowan put one behind DeSalvo to put the Prof’s within 1. Then, at the 3:04 mark of the third period it was jake Pearlstein able to tie it. The two teams continued back and forth play, when Axl Frisina found an opening and slotted it into the cage, putting the Knights up front 3-2. But the lead was short lived, as Jake Pearlstein found his second of the night to tie the game back up at 3. The teams battled hard for 2 and a half minutes until Neumann’s Delesky was sent to the box for a tripping call at center. And with that, Rowan was able to capitalize in thrilling fashion, as Nicholas Klausner found a puck in the slot and put it home. Rowan will look forward to the championship final, and a date with the Farmingdale Rams. Final Score: Rowan 4 Neumann 3.
